Porcelain dental crown restoration can be life-changing, whether you need to protect a weakened tooth or cover an unsightly tooth for cosmetic purposes. A damaged or weak tooth affects your functionality when speaking or chewing. And if your tooth is aesthetically beyond repair, a porcelain crown can completely cover the tooth. Let’s dive in and learn more about how Dr. William Ossakow at Stone Ridge Family Dentistry can improve your smile and functionality using porcelain dental crowns.
A porcelain dental crown is a custom-designed cap that matches the look of your natural teeth. It is made with durable ceramic materials and completely covers the affected tooth. Best of all, it is specifically designed to blend seamlessly with your natural smile.
A porcelain crown often covers a tooth after a root canal procedure. However, it can also address multiple dental issues, from restorative to cosmetic.
Certainly, a porcelain dental crown can be useful for cosmetic reasons, but the most important benefit of dental crowns is that they restore the functionality of your teeth. They protect compromised teeth, and you will be able to chew and bite just as you could before the tooth became damaged.
Equally important, the dental crown is a protective barrier. It prevents sensitivity and ensures the tooth underneath it stays intact.
Porcelain crowns are meticulously crafted to resemble the natural color and shape of your teeth closely. For cosmetic uses, dental crowns can conceal many imperfections in your smile. This can include discolored teeth, along with teeth with chips or cracks.
Porcelain is nearly as durable as your natural dental enamel. When they are cared for properly, you can expect your porcelain crowns to last between 10 and 15 years. It’s also great to know that porcelain is a material that is naturally stain-resistant.
To keep your porcelain crowns looking beautiful, brush twice daily and floss before bed at night. Avoid foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. Most importantly, I will continue visiting Dr. Ossakow’s office every six months for routine checkups.
You will usually need to visit Dr. Ossakow’s office twice to get your porcelain crown. During the first appointment, Dr. Ossakow will prepare your tooth by reshaping it to accommodate the porcelain crown. Then, he will take impressions that will be sent to the lab where your crown is made. While you wait a couple of weeks for your crown, you will wear a temporary one. The permanent crown is placed when you go to the office for your second visit.
